Ultra-Rugged XP7 LTE Smartphones Put To The Test During Large Local And National Events This Summer
SAN MATEO, Calif. (Sept. 2, 2015) — Sonim Technologies, maker of the world's toughest mobile phones, announced today that personnel from San Diego Fire - Rescue Department tested the company's ultra-rugged XP7 LTE AndroidTM smartphone for emergency preparedness during major city and national events in the San Diego area.
For a two-month pilot program, Sonim supplied their XP7 band class 14 enabled smartphones to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department during four major events in the San Diego area including the Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon, 4th of July Celebration, Comic Con International, and the San Diego Gay Pride Parade.
Firefighters used the Sonim devices as both a CAD interoperability and situational awareness solution paired with two separate custom Android applications built by US Digital Design and CommandWear Systems Inc. With these mobile solutions, firefighters in the field and dispatch teams were able to gain a greater perspective of the events unfolding in real time.
“The Department was anxious to test the Sonim ultra-rugged handsets because of their durability, long battery life, loudspeaker, visibility in the sunlight and glove touch screen,” said Captain Karl Becker of San Diego Fire-Rescue. “We wanted to see how these features; coupled with the custom software applications might improve our ability to capture the full scope of events. Having an understanding of where our personnel were in real time meant we could respond quicker and more effectively.”
Thanks to this successful pilot program, San Diego Fire-Rescue will continue to test the XP7 smartphones amongst different divisions, including lifeguards.
Additional XP7 features include 40 hours of talk time, waterproof, extreme durability in hot and dusty environments, visibility under direct sunlight and support for a wide range of Android applications through Google PlayTM.
“We’ve tested our application on many different devices and have been most impressed by the XP7,” said Mike Morrow, CEO of CommandWear Systems Inc. “Responders need accurate and timely GPS location updates. The fact that the XP7 has such an impressive battery life has allowed us to deliver the necessary updates through a long shift and more.”
Sonim’s rugged mobile phones are built specifically to withstand the rigors faced by public safety and defense sectors, as well as those who work in industries such as manufacturing, construction, transportation, oil and gas, hospitals and utilities.
Sonim is committed to serving the public safety sector by expanding its partnerships with application developers and plans to launch more pilot trials with various police, fire, and EMS departments across the U.S. The company was recently awarded a data and communications solutions agreement from the Public Procurement Association to offer phones to state public safety departments through an intergovernmental procurement process.
"At Sonim, we're confident that the San Diego Fire-Rescue pilot program will demonstrate once again that our devices are the most rugged available anywhere. In particular, our XP7 will prove to complement these types of public safety applications perfectly," said Robert Escalle, Vice President of Public Safety and Defense. “We have a number of pilot programs lined up, and we’re excited to continue to serve the brave men and women that protect our community.”
The Sonim family of rugged phones includes the XP5, XP6, and the XP7, which are available nationally at AT&T retail locations.
