Construction Pittman Paves Atlanta’s Superhighways

SONIM KEEPS CREWS CONNECTED IN OUTDOOR WEATHER CONDITIONS

The Company
From paving the first concrete street in Atlanta to surfacing the superhighways of the 21st Century, Pittman Construction has spent more than 100 years helping build the highways and byways of the fast-growing communities and businesses in the metro Atlanta area and throughout the state of Georgia.

Founded in 1884 by Frank Pittman, Pittman Construction has been committed to helping Atlanta grow for four generations. This family owned business operates six asphalt production companies within the Atlanta area and offers a complete array of services in the heavy highway industry. Pittman Construction has the capability to complete 90 percent of all necessary work for the successful completion of a project, offering services such as asphalt paving, concrete construction (including paving, structures and flatwork), grading, storm sewer installation, excavation, erosion control and traffic control.

The Challenge

Named the primary contractor for the Georgia Department of Transportation, Pittman is responsible for providing high-quality road and surface construction, including massive structures and miles of street and interstate construction all over the state. In order to maintain the high standards Pittman is known for, they need to equip employees with a mobile device they can rely on to keep crews connected under rugged conditions.

Operators, project managers, and foreman, in the heavy highway industry come in contact with water, concrete, and asphalt on a regular basis. Crews are required to climb on top of towers and tanks, and often work with extremely noisy equipment on construction sites. Previous handsets deployed by Pittman were incapable of surviving the extreme outdoor conditions that are common with workers in the field. Calls were constantly missed because of low speaker volume in high noise areas, causing a lapse in worker communication.

“It Is Not Necessary For My Crew To Be In Contact 24/7, For Example While They Are On Top Of A Tower, However It Is Important That They Have A Phone That Can Take A Beating If It Falls From That Tower.”

Devices are constantly being subjected to all different types of hazardous situations, so crews need to know that their handset will still function after a long day on the job.

The Solution
After recognizing that the previously deployed Nextel devices were neither loud enough nor tough enough to compete with the current rugged environment, Pittman construction’s IT Manager, Julius Montgomery, decided to find a new mobile solution. The 10 Sonim XP STRIKES were highly recommended by Pittman’s Sprint sales representative and were deployed throughout Julius’s crews in the fall of 2013. An additional 40 were deployed in January 2014.

“During 2013 I Had To Replace Devices Almost Weekly Because Of Damage That Happened On The Job. I Was Spending Too Much Money On Devices That Were Clearly Not Made For A Rugged Environment.”

The Benefits
The Sonim XP STRIKE handsets held up to the extreme conditions on the construction site, offering a solution to Pittman’s frequent breakage issues, low speaker volume, and warranty disputes. Julius’s team found addition- al benefits throughout Sonim’s line of Enterprise Grade Accessories. Crews have been able to rely on the Rugged Pouch to secure devices while working on the clock.

Workers No Longer Experience Issues With Missed Calls Because The Sonim Devices Can Be Heard Over Loud Equipment With Help Of The Additional XPand Loud Speaker.

“These Accessories Are Made For Real Life, And We Use Them In Real Life Rugged Situations.”

Sonim’s 3-year comprehensive warranty, which even covers accidental damage, has helped decrease replacement costs and provide piece of mind for Pittman Construction’s management, and allows field workers to focus more on the job and no longer on broken devices longer on broken devices.
